About this event
Instructor: James Robertson Skill Level: Beginner, Intermediate Ages: 14+ Medium: Oil Painting Total Class Hours: 15 Description: Join me and explore the fundamentals of landscape painting through a steady, confidence‑building progression of skills. Over five weeks, you will move from simple observational sketches to a fully realized landscape painting, learning how artists translate the world around them into compelling compositions. The first class focuses on the essential building blocks of any successful landscape: composition, value structure, and preliminary studies. You will practice making quick sketches to understand placement and balance, experiment with value to establish depth, and create small color studies that help guide later painting decisions. These early exercises set the foundation for every step that follows. In the weeks ahead, the class will return to composition with a deeper eye, exploring how to refine an initial idea and prepare it for a finished piece. You will learn how to transfer your studies to canvas, how to approach color mixing with intention, and how to create convincing foreground and background relationships that give a painting a sense of space and atmosphere. Each session builds on the last, encouraging the development of both technical skill and personal style. By the end of the course, you will have a stronger understanding of how landscapes come together, from the first thumbnail sketch to the final brushstrokes, and will leave with a completed painting and the confidence to continue exploring.
