Description
Music Appreciation with Robert Holliston:Curtains up! Music of the Golden Era of BroadwayAn appreciative survey of the Golden Era of Broadway musicals, from the early days of operetta through glory days of the mid-twentieth century until the British/Hollywood invasion of the 1980s. Frequently cited as America’s most significant contribution to world theatre, the New York stage musical dominated several generations of pop culture. Broadway created its own stars, generated a public appetite for original cast albums and, in contributing immeasurably to the Great American Songbook, provided cafés, cabarets, and jazz clubs with enough material to last until … well, 2026 and counting.
This series will focus primarily on works long considered as ground-breakers, and their creators who challenged our perception of what the musical as a genre could do. Pieces like Show Boat, Porgy and Bess, Oklahoma!, West Side Story, Gypsy, Hair, Company, and A Chorus Line will be listened to, watched, discussed, and contextualized not only in terms of historical importance, but as sheer entertainment gold. If the above titles form the backbone of our course, there will be side trips made to other ports and mention made of notable performers who devoted the bulk of their careers to the Broadway musical.
