Live Sound 101 is a hands-on introduction to live concert audio. Students who complete the class will gain the essential skills to set-up and manage professional, high-quality sound for live performances. Topics include feedback prevention, speaker and microphone placement, and the operation of both analog and digital sound equipment.
In partnership with Music in the Park at Beacon Hill, this course blends classroom instruction with real-world experience. Students will apply their skills in a live concert setting during Music in the Park events.
They’ll gain practical experience working with microphones, speakers, mixers, and other essential gear.
Ideal for:• Aspiring front-of-house mix engineers• Musicians looking to enhance their live sound skills• Audio techs wanting to strengthen their foundational knowledge of live sound engineering
Note on Class Schedule: The first 6 weeks will be held at the VCM
July 19 – August 23: Students will participate in on-location learning by helping run sound for live concerts at the Beacon Hill Bandshell alongside professional sound technicians. Responsibilities may include assisting with backline setup, sound checks, and live mixing under instructor supervision.
Through these weeks, students will be participating in on-location learning, getting the opportunity to work with professional sound technicians by helping to run sound for concerts at the Beacon Hill Bandshell. Students will help with backline, sound check, and live mixing under the supervision of their instructor and local sound technicians. In addition to these dates, there will be alternate dates/locations for field work opportunities. The instructor will discuss this with the students during week 1 of the class and confirm field work scheduling.
