Cooking is a life skill that all should have familiarity with, and thanks to Prometheus, the grill has been man’s outdoor cooking domain since time immemorial! Pairing this need with the 9th Grade summer reading required text, The Robe, Mr. Miggins, and Mr. Sellier will offer a deep dive into appreciating this classic Christian historical novel, as well as a hands-on introductory class in preparing and barbecuing a selection of choice meats on the grill (gas and charcoal). After lunch, rising Freshmen will also learn leisure as they socialize with each other over a variety of lawn games in the courtyard! Yes, cooking and eating food prepared from stovetops in diners, drive-ins, and dives is satisfying, but move over Guy Fieri, there is nothing like the scent of smoky charcoal and burning wood on a summer afternoon! But there is something much more primal and deeply elemental in preparing your favorite meat and vegetables over a real, fired grill. We don’t know if it's true or not - the myth about Prometheus stealing the fire from Gods and giving it to humans. But if it is, we should be forever grateful to him for it, because barbecue is a universal language! This camp will run from Monday through Thursday with extended hours to make it a full week. Campers should bring their own copy of the required novel for summer reading, The Robe, by Lloyd C. Douglas. The Robe is an excellent novel, but it is 35 chapters long (472 pages). The instruction in class will complement a manageable nightly reading schedule to finish the novel by Thursday.
