About this event
This course could be offered in-person or by Zoom if participants prefer an online version. Course Work In each session, students will discuss current events of the German-speaking countries, and will receive materials and historical information to help them deepen their understanding of German culture and thought. The class will read, discuss, and analyze classic German novels and contemporary or historical texts. The group will discuss the First and Second World War, as the war trauma is an important aspect of German literary, political, and social culture, even today. The instructor will provide occasional grammatical exercises that will help the students improve their conversation, and their critical argument in speech and writing. German language competency required to enroll in C1 Conversation Group: Understanding: The language learner should be able to understand conversations about daily routines, and specific topics like traveling around the world, health and diet. The language learner should be able to follow the news on TV and in the Radio. Speaking: The language learner should be able to talk about daily routines, and specific topics. S/he should be able to contribute to almost any kind of discussion. Reading: The language learner should be able to read any kind of article in newspapers, any kind of book. Writing: The language learner should be able to write any kind of essay, email or letter. Grammar: The language learner should be able to correctly apply most grammatical structures. The sentence structure will be correct in most cases. The language learner should be familiar with: Subjunctive II in past tense, subjunctive II in past tense with modal verbs and causal conjugations. The language learner can discuss grammatical questions in class, but the C1 conservation class is in general not designed to focus on this aspect of German language skills.
