Supervisor: Vince Philips People are often unaware of the rich history of Cumberland County in the Civil War - from the Confederate capture of Mechanicsburg to the Sporting Hill Elementary engagement to the cannon duel between Confederates at Peace Church and Union soldiers near 32nd Street and Market Street. This camp will address the larger view of Cumberland County and the Civil War and the Confederacy’s invasion into Pennsylvania well north of Gettysburg. Chambersburg, Carlisle, and Mechanicsburg and other towns were all captured by the Confederates. A take-home map will be provided for attendees to encourage family visits to nearby Civil War sites and to the Civil War Museum in Harrisburg.
