Advisor: Parent Volunteer Email: scioly.c.basis@gmail.com Exact end date TBD Science Olympiad promotes interest and critical thinking in STEM and fosters teamwork. Student teams compete in ‘events’ pertaining to various scientific disciplines, including earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering. Events are knowledge-based (taking a test or mathematically analyzing data), engineering-based (constructing a device following specific parameters and testing it against others), or lab-based (performing experiments to achieve certain goals). Experience gained and achievement earned here are highly regarded. Division C, high school, is much more student-driven, requires a higher level of commitment, practice, and autonomy. The team would be supported by two Parent Advisors (and a Faculty Advisor). Parent support in mentoring their student remains invaluable. Student's previous Science Olympiad experience is valuable but not crucial. Team interest is gauged in September. The season runs from October to mid-March. By October, event teams are formed to work on certain topics. November through January entails a couple of invitational tournaments, culminating in Regional Tournament in the last week of January or first week of February, and State Tournament in middle of March. The school team meets weekly during the season to coordinate. Additional work sessions outside of the Friday on campus time are per mutual convenience of event team partners and time commitment is self-determined.
