Description: This course examines the role of the audience in performing arts events. A performing arts experience may be powerful on many levels, but how do we articulate an experience that is so personally emotional and transformative? How do we know that we have attended a quality performing arts event? This course will explore key attributes of a quality performing arts experience, from the essential knowledge we need, to the risk we take, to being able to detect an authentic experience and sharing the experience with others in collective engagement. Through online activities and at least three live performing arts experiences, you will have the opportunity to explore creative engagement, self-expression, self-actualization, and develop connections to Opera, Ballet/Dance, Symphony, and Theatre in Kansas City. Students will investigate performing arts principles and conventions as part of three self-selected live experiences. This course is available for academic credit as well as continuing education and community enrichment. The course will support the development of a community of learners, and facilitate connections between learners to support and promote performing arts attendance. Following successful completion of the course, participants will be able to
- Identify Key Attributes of a Quality Experience.
- Access specific knowledge prior to attending a performance.
- Estimate the economic, psychological, social and functional risk related to performing arts participation.
- Detect performer authenticity during and after a performance.
- Collaborate with others to support the collective engagement in the Performing Arts. The course may be taken without credit, as a community enrichment learning experience, or for academic credit. An MLA/APA 1500 word paper is required for credit, as well as documented participation. The course may be repeated, as each semester will have unique performing arts experiences.
