Raku Workshop at Mike Roche's Studio in Spencer, Ma Location: Mike Roche Studio 19 Westland Drive Spencer, Ma,01562 Join in a 1 day (5 hour) Raku workshop with Mike on November 4th! We will pre-make and bisque pieces with raku clay, Laguna Clay #250, and bring them on workshop day. Once there, we will glaze with raku glazes provided by Mike. Participants may use their own raku glazes and oxides. You may want to wax your work ahead of time, to save some time during the workshop. This workshop is limited to 6 participants. We will be firing 3 kiln loads. Kilns are stacked with a single shelf with enough space around the work to allow for any piece in the kiln to be removed at any time without being obstructed by another piece. Walls cannot be made paper thin. This renders them too fragile to be successfully removed with tongs in a group firing. Mike has provided a video to help estimate the amount of space you will likely have in the kiln. Each participant can expect to get 3-7 pieces fired depending on size and shape. There is no guarantee that everything will be fired. Breakages can occur if your pieces are thin, or if your piece slips during the removal process. Each participant is allotted 20lbs of clay each. Mike has a variety of glaze including, a white crackle, an Alligator (dry textured oil spot), a “Green to Maroon “ luster( high gloss copper) and a sodium blue glaze that can flash red. He also has an array of commercial glazes that have been donated from past participants. All participants must come prepared for a safe experience: No sandals, no shorts, no polyester clothing, long hair must be tied back. They provide all glazing and firing materials and supplies, gloves, tongs, and all safety gear. We will provide water for all participants, but you should bring a snack or lunch with you!
