About this event

For well over 200 years, the Southcentral Kentucky region has been noted for producing some of the most well-regarded handmade baskets in the country. Join instructors, Brent Bjorkman, Director of the Kentucky Museum, and Beth Hester, basket artist and co-owner of GH Productions, The Basketmakers Catalog, as they share the history of traditional white oak basket making, including overviews of the key families practicing and passing on their intimate skills, an overview of the distinct construction techniques making these regional artworks distinct, provide context of the move of these prized possessions over time from utilitarian objects to sought-after pieces to be collected and cherished, and more. Students are highly encouraged to bring with them a "family" basket or two for identification and to share their family stories about their basket as they know them.
