About this event
Wednesdays, 6:00-8:00 PM • 6 weeks MDI High School Instructor: Mike Duffy Explore more than a century of creativity, innovation, and cultural change through the lens of American art. Beginning with the years following World War I and continuing to the present day, this hands-on course examines the major artistic movements that have shaped American visual culture, including Regionalism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Minimalism, Photorealism, Street Art, and many others. Each week, we will study a different period in American art history, discussing the social and historical influences that inspired these movements and the artists who defined them. The course highlights more than 50 influential American artists, providing an engaging overview of the evolution of American art over the last century. In addition to learning art history, students will create their own artwork inspired by the styles and techniques of the artists we study. Each class includes a studio project based on one or two featured artists, allowing participants to experiment with a wide range of media, approaches, and creative ideas. No previous art history experience is required. This course is designed for adults of all skill levels who are interested in learning about American art while developing their own artistic practice. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced artist, you will gain a deeper appreciation for the rich diversity of American art and leave with a portfolio of artwork inspired by some of the nation's most influential artists.
