Picture books are often seen as books just for kids. But their art, storytelling, and cultural history can be rewarding for readers of any age. This engaging course explores the history of picture books—from early illustrated stories to modern classics—and looks at how pictures and words work together to tell powerful stories. Through discussion, close looking, and book sharing, participants will revisit beloved favorites and discover new ones. Together we’ll celebrate the creativity, beauty, and emotional depth that make picture books meaningful far beyond childhood. No prior art or literary background is required—just curiosity and a love of books. This course is offered for free, with an invitation to donate to Island Readers & Writers in celebration of its 20th anniversary. Courtney Waring holds B.A. and M.A. degrees in Art History as well as a graduate-level certification in elementary education. Before joining Island Readers & Writers, she worked at The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, the Delaware Art Museum, the Barnes Foundation, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
