About this event
Wednesdays, 6:00-8:00 PM • 6 weeks MDI High School Instructor: Mike Duffy 100+ years of American art history with a little bit of a Maine connection It’s back, a hands-on art history class covering the last 100 or so years of American art and the impact it has had on all of us. Learn a little art history while doing some art yourself. In this class we will begin around 1913 and move through the art time line to the present. During the first couple of decades of the 20th century, the center of the art world begins to shift to America as European countries are showing signs of war. American artists begin to take center stage in the art world. We will explore the various art styles that develop through the years, as well as those artists who created these styles. Artists such as Mary Cassett, Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keefe and Andy Warhol just to name a few. And Maine, already an artist’s destination, is another part of the class. We’ll focus on Maine specific artists including Andrew and Jamie Wyeth, Marsden Hartley and Ashley Bryan. We’ll go over the different works of art, understanding how they were made and recognizing the styles that developed. Also and most important, each class will include studio time, as we take a piece by one of the artists we are covering and recreate the piece in the style expressed by the artist. A hands-on approach to really understand the art and the artist. Supplies will be provided.
