Description
Adult. This is an advanced class for hand-tool woodworkers. Using skills developed either from the Rec & Ed classes, Woodworking With Hand Tools 1 and/or Woodworking With Hand Tools 2, the student will further develop his or her joinery skills.
From Wikipedia – “Mortise and Tenon A mortise and tenon (occasionally mortise and tenon) joint connects two pieces of wood or other material. Woodworkers around the world have used it for thousands of years to join pieces of wood, mainly when the adjoining pieces connect at right angles. Mortise and tenon joints are strong and stable joints that can be used in many projects. They connect by either gluing or friction-fitting into place. The mortise and tenon joint also gives an attractive look. One drawback to this joint is the difficulty in making it because of the precise measuring and tight cutting required. In its most basic form, a mortise and tenon joint is both simple and strong. There are many variations of this type of joint, and the basic mortise and tenon has two components:
1. the mortise hole, and
2. the tenon tongue.”
The class is both a skills and a project class. Students will complete a small mortise and tenon stand and then move to a small end-table. Tools will be provided. A materials fee of $60 will be due to the instructor by check or cash on the first day of class, which covers the materials and dimensioning of the lumber. Students will be provided a species of hardwoods for both projects. The classes focus the student's attention on the joinery. For all items to fit properly, a high degree of precision is required. Students need to be very familiar with the use of hand tools, saws, chisels and planes.
The project will be unfinished, as we do not have the facilities or the time to deal most woodworking finishes. Recommendations will be made for available finishes.
Questions can be directed to the instructor, rather than to the Rec & Ed staff.
