Description
Adult. Prerequisite: Woodworking with Hand Tools Beginning or instructor approval.
This 8 week course has intentionally small class sizes to ensure that proper attention will be given to each student. Through demonstrations and practice, this class will give you the necessary skills and experience to allow you to build more advanced projects. We will increase your experience, using saws, chisels, hand planes, and other specialty hand tools, jigs and fixtures. We will demonstrate additional techniques for mor accurate hand tool work. We’re excited to share the joy of creating usable wooden heirlooms and foster a love of working with your hands and simple tools in a functional way.
This semester's class will feature something new, building your own tools. We will build a mallet and a marking gauge. Making your first mallet has always been a right o passage for traditional joiners. Our mallet will have a laminated Maple head with leather on one end and a Hickory handle. The adjustable making gauge will will be out of white oak with brass and utilize threaded inserts to hold the blade and adjustment thumbscrew. Both tools are used in almost every other handtool project that you will ever build.
There will be a $40 materials fee to cover the cost of lumber and hardware. All required tools will be provided! However, if the student would like to provide some of their own tools here is a suggested list:
-6” 4R ruler (Imperial/inches) such as the Shinwa brand -3 good quality chisels in 1/4, 3/8 and 3/4 sizes. A suggested brand is the Narex Richter brand -A woodworking marking knife. A suggested brand is the Lee Valley plastic handle model -A 4” square. A suggested brand is the iGaging 4" Precision Double Square -A low angle block plane -A joinery back saw such as a dovetail saw.
