Ekphrastic Poetry Workshop (1 session) Adults | All Skill Levels Instructor: Charlene Fix Wednesday, July 22 7:00pm – 9:00pm Have you ever had to grab a pen and paper in order to record a sudden flow of memories, images, and thoughts after an encounter with art? Poems born of the creative exchange with another form of art—painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, architecture, music, film, dance, myth, fiction—are called ekphrastic poems, from Greek ek—out of and phrasis—speech or expression. Let’s participate in this old and affectionate relationship between poetry and visual art by writing poems in response to Anita Dawson’s lush paintings, so full of gorgeous colors and surprising images, content, aura, and juxtapositions. We will study a few iconic ekphrastic poems to get acclimated, walk through the show, and write freely in response to a painting, then return to the classroom to turn our notes into poems.
