The Naturalist’s Sketchbook is a hobby that requires minimal equipment and expense, but can bring great satisfaction and a fresh perspective on the natural world. In this indoor class, Laurel will introduce participants to pen and ink, colored pencil, and watercolor art techniques and the many styles available to illustrate nature journals. Using her wide-ranging collection of nature specimens, participants will learn to truly see the intricate beauty and complex forms of plants and animals. Artistic talent is not necessary to keep a naturalist’s sketchbook. All that is needed is a sense of wonder and a desire to learn more about nature. Laurel began keeping a naturalist’s sketchbook in graduate school at Antioch New England where she earned a Master’s degree in environmental studies. The hand-drawn, hand-illustrated illuminated sketchbook of her relationship to wild plants and wild creatures is one of her most precious possessions. The Naturalist’s Sketchbook is designed to start participants on the path of journaling their own adventures in nature, so they will have a treasury of life experiences outdoors.
