For over 50 years, Charlie Hewitt has been a force of creative nature. A prolific American painter, printmaker, and public artist, his mastery spans a vast landscape of mediums. From the galleries of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney, Charlie’s art is a testament to curiosity and the grit of his upbringing. Influenced by the energetic rhythms of the millworker community he called home, he breathes life into abstract forms. In 2019, Hewitt embarked on what would become his most culturally resonant endeavor: The Hopeful Project. It began simply - a single, lighted aluminum sculpture commissioned by Speedwell Projects to crest a rooftop in Portland, Maine. Confronting the long, dark winters of the Northeast, Charlie felt a singular compulsion: to illuminate the darkness with a simple, profound message. “I felt compelled to illuminate that corner of our world,” he noted, “with a message of hope.” What started on a single roof has since ignited a national conversation.
