Workshop Description:During this 2-day workshop, participants will explore approaches to developing and emphasizing abstract relationships in a painting based on direct observation. The instructor will work with students to set up their own still life, and cover topics such as color mixing, value relationships and framing the scene/composing. Participants will begin by painting from observation, gathering specific information from their still lives. From this information, we will search for formal abstract relationships such as alignments, pathways through the space, as well as color and value design. Students will develop an appreciation for the importance of the “specificity of looking” to discovering a unique and coherent abstract structure in a representational painting.
We will focus on making one painting over the course of 2 days, based on individual still-life set-ups. Students are encouraged to bring in some of their own items for their set-ups, if possible. There will be a focus on creating a simple, but sophisticated still-life arrangement. A broad range of painting styles and skill levels are welcome. Although we are working observationally, this does not necessarily mean high realism. The emphasis will be on the emergence of the abstract structure of the painting rather than on traditional techniques or skills. Some basic familiarity with oil paint is recommended.
Outline:Day 1: Setting up a still life, color mixing, painting from observationDay 2: Finding abstract relationships, layering, repainting
