This two-day workshop explores how artists can use limited palettes, dominant color relationships, and value structure to create landscape paintings with greater mood, atmosphere, and emotional impact. Through demonstrations, discussion, and hands-on painting exercises, students will learn how simplifying color choices can create stronger design, clearer visual statements, and more expressive paintings.
Student Level: Open to painters with prior experience (beginner through advanced). This workshop is not intended for absolute beginners with no painting experience.
Medium: Oil is preferred; however, painters working in other media are welcome provided they have prior experience in their chosen medium.
Students will learn to:• Use color relationships to create mood and atmosphere• Create stronger color harmony through limited palettes• Use a dominant color to strengthen emotional impact• Understand the relationship between color and value• Expand color possibilities while working with fewer pigments
Students will gain practical tools for making stronger color decisions and creating landscape paintings with greater unity, impact, and emotional expression.
Students are responsible for bringing their own materials. A supply list will be provided prior to the workshop.
Workshop Format:Day 1: Understanding color relationships, limited palettes, and creating mood through demonstrations and exercises.Day 2: Applying concepts to complete landscape paintings with individual instruction and critique.
Teaching Style: Mark combines demonstrations, painting exercises, individual instruction, and group discussion to create an engaging and supportive learning environment. He specializes in making complex ideas accessible and practical, helping students understand not only what to do, but why it works. His student-first philosophy encourages exploration, confidence, and growth for painters at every experience level.
