Indira Cariappa Materials List1. Watercolor Paper: 140 pound (or higher weight) cold press watercolor paper. I recommend a watercolor block rather than loose sheets to start your watercolor journey. Brand could be Arches, Winsor & Newton or any other. Size around 10x12If using loose sheets, you will need a backing board and masking tape to support the watercolor paper.2. Watercolor Paints: I prefer Watercolor Tubes. However, I encourage you to bring whatever you already have with you. For a good experience of learning good quality materials are very important. We will start off with a warm and cool version of Red, Blue and Yellow and a few neutrals. Any tube set with 10 to 12 colors from brands like Winsor & Newton, QOR, Daniel Smith, Holbein, M Graham is good. If you want to get individual color tubes, then these are the suggested colors to have are Cadmium Red or Quinacridone Red, Alizarin Crimson permanent or Quinacridone Rose, Cadmium Yellow or New Gamboge, Lemon Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna and Chinese White3. Brushes:A few good quality brushes are required for good painting experience and quality of learning. Synthetic blends are good to start off with. Any brush that holds water and comes to a good point and springs back is considered good for watercolor. Bring anything you already have with you. I recommend 10PCS Variety Travel Biaelk Professional Artist Paint Watercolor Brushes Set from Amazon, as you get a set of 10 brushes which are good quality. If you want to buy separate brushes, it’s good to have one 1-inch Flat wash Brush and Round Brushes: Nos: 14, 6, 2 to start with.4. Watercolor Palette: Any plastic watercolor palette with lid and at least 10 to 20 wells to squeeze out paints and enough room for color mixing. Recommended palettes are Jack Richeson, Masterson Aqua Pro, Creative Mark. 5. 2 Plastic cups or small containers to hold water. Paper towels for mopping water. Masking tape or artist tape, drawing book to work out ideas, HB Pencil, and a good eraser, a Hair dryer for drying watercolor (optional).
These supplies can be found online Amazon, Blick.com, jerrysartarama.com to name a few. Art stores like Hobby Lobby or Michaels may not carry all the above materials. Local Art Stores are also a good place to buy.
