About this event
Description
Exploring Ceramic Glazes: Let the Color Begin!w/Jerry BennettBeginning to Intermediate Ceramics ExperienceA six-week workshopThis workshop is designed for ceramic artists who want to better understand glazes, color development, and surface possibilities in their work. A special emphasis will be placed on Mason Color ceramic stains and how they can be used to expand your palette and create richer, more personal surface effects. For potters who rely mainly on art center glazes or commercial prepackaged glazes, this class offers an opportunity to learn how colorants and glaze materials interact to create safer, more beautiful glazes.
My goal for this class is to take some of the mystery out of glazing. We will review a detailed handout that describes the materials used in glazes and why they matter, discuss common glaze problems and how to begin correcting them, and explore how to test and adjust glazes to better meet your needs. As a group, we will make glazes, discuss application methods, and pay particular attention to how Mason Color ceramic stains can influence color, opacity, and surface character when used thoughtfully and tested carefully.
During this class, you will develop a glaze designed for cone 6 oxidation firing. If you have a notebook computer or iPad, please bring it with you to class. We will be running calculation software using Excel. This is a six-week class.
