Tablet (or card) weaving dates back to at least the Iron Age, though historians continue to debate just how far this remarkable craft extends into the past. Using square cards with a hole in each corner, students will learn how turning the tablets creates intricate woven bands with endless possibilities for color, pattern, and design. In this beginner-friendly workshop, you'll explore the fundamentals of tablet weaving, including basic historical uses, warping, pattern creation, and weaving techniques. Then you'll put your new skills to work by creating modern, practical accessories such as a wristlet keychain or phone tether, perfect for holiday gift giving or keeping for yourself. You'll leave with the knowledge and materials needed to continue weaving at home if you choose. *Students should bring a belt. *Please note: This class involves repetitive hand and wrist movements, including pulling lengths of wool and twisting cards. *Price of class includes materials fee and lunch Ash Brower Ash has been a fiber and textile artist the majority of their life. They like to joke that they had the most wonderful set of grandmothers who identified their AuDHD early and found a productive stim that kept them busy, engaged and set on a lifelong quest culminating in sheep. They learned to sew, knit and crochet at the age of 6, and eventually joined the living history community which led to a love of spinning, weaving, dying and historic textiles. They now live on a homestead in southern Maryland with their spouse, twin teenagers, a clouder of cats, too many sheep, flocks of poultry and two overworked live stock guardian dogs farming and creating full time. They have taught previously at the Waterford school, at Vikingscon, and hold workshops on the farm.
