Could a fictional story convince people that an alien invasion was really happening? Join us as we investigate one of the most influential radio broadcasts in American history through Howard Koch's Invasion from Mars, the script behind Orson Welles' legendary 1938 adaptation of The War of the Worlds. This realistic broadcast blurred the line between news and fiction, startling some listeners and sparking a national conversation about the power of mass media, a conversation that continues today. Using Reader's Theater to experience the script as its original audience did, you will analyze how Koch built suspense, created realism, and captivated listeners. Through literary analysis and discussion, you'll explore how science fiction can shape public opinion, influence culture, and challenge us to think critically about the information we hear, read, and believe.
