About this event
About the Tour: Explore an Archaeological site of the Ute Tribe with Yampatika! Along the way, attendees will learn about the members of the Ute Tribe used local flora and fauna, as well as their quarrying of the minerals at Windy Ridge. Local geology will be brought to life by the Geology Professor from Colorado Mountain College while US Forest Service Archaeologists talk about the human history of the region. Ages 14+. Where to Meet: We will meet in the parking lot of the Yampatika Office at 925 Weiss Drive at 8:15am. What to Expect: This trail covers 5.5 miles with ~700 feet of elevation gain. We will stop at the halfway point to explore the quarry and eat lunch. What to Wear/Bring: Dress for the weather (current and future) and dress in layers! Many people like to wear long pants/sleeves to protect themselves from the sun, dirt, and things that might make them itchy (mosquitos, etc.). Avoid cotton when you’re able and go with a synthetic material or wool. Also remember to wear sturdy hiking shoes, good socks, a cool sun hat, and sunscreen! Be sure to pack 2 water bottles, snacks, sunscreen, extra layers, and your waterproof jacket- weather changes quickly, so make sure to prepare for cooler/wet weather. Please bring along any medications you may need, including epi-pens. Due to the sensitive nature of this area, ask that you please leave furry friends at home unless they are service animals! This program has a 8-person minimum to run and will be canceled, with refunds, if we do not receive at least 8 registrations. If you have additional questions or need more information, please email hailey@yampatika.org or call the office at (970) 871-9151.
