Dr. Steve Spaulding will discuss the development of public education in New England leading to the establishment of the first public High School in Scarborough. He’ll review the development of public education in New England from the Puritans onward, through education laws in the new State of Maine, and the steps leading to the establishment of a public high school in Scarborough, drawing on town documents, many local images from the Laughton Collection, and the wonderful monograph A High School Comes to Scarborough by Linda Snow McLoon.
