About this event
Can you tell the difference between a 100 year old Sugar Maple and a 100 year old Norway Maple? What is the history of certain trees planted in cities and cemeteries? What is the eco system of where the Saco River hits the salty marsh? Will the bald eagles be nesting here this year? Learn this and much more about the trees and birds of beautiful Wabanaki land at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco Maine. Park at the little cemetery office and meet in that parking lot to take a slow, mindful walk through the beautiful cemetery and to the exceptional view of the marsh. Learn about late summer plants at the wild edge of the cemetery, do some late fall birding and start to see differences in trees that you can learn to identify on your own. This is a walk along a wide paved path and would be accessible for wheelchairs. Wear comfortable shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, sunscreen, and an optional brimmed hat or cap (which helps with both sun and bugs). Bring binoculars, if desired. Walk starts promptly at 5pm. Note: Please communicate any accessibility concerns at registration and we will ask Laura to contact you to discuss any needed accommodations. Registration closes at noon on 9/2. Laura Grover is a Maine Master Naturalist, botanical illustrator for Fedco Seeds, and an ambassador for all the "little guys" in nature. She has led many plant, tree, vernal pool, and bird walks for people of all ages. Laura enjoys bringing people together to look closely in nature, practice mindfulness outside, and be a sensory animal in the woods.
