About this event
Share your travel stories with a broader audience! Lots of magazines accept queries and even full articles on many different travel topics. If your travel destination story idea is about something interesting and different, you’ve got a very good chance of selling your story. In this two-session course, veteran freelance travel writer Ava Kabouchy shares her own cultural travel experiences, discusses the different genres of travel articles, outlines the steps needed to get your travel story and photographs into print, then guides you to identify an angle that will catch an editor’s attention and to draft your own compelling query letter. For the first session, please bring an article from a travel magazine with an especially good (or especially bad) lead sentence i.e. did the sentence make you want to read (or not read) the article? For the second session, you will be asked to present three photographs, your lead sentence, and your first paragraph for a proposed article (more on this during the first session). Saudi Arabia was not on instructor Ava Kabouchy’s bucket list, but when offered a teaching job in Riyadh, she accepted immediately. On her first trip into the Arabian desert she saw photo ops everywhere prompting her to write her first travel article on the beauty of the Arabian desert. She has published numerous articles on the places where she has since traveled including the Camino de Santiago, Western Mongolia, France, Iceland, and coming home to Maine.
