This course provides students with the knowledge and hands-on skills required to inspect, diagnose, repair, and test low voltage electrical and electronic control systems found on modern emergency vehicles. Emphasis is placed on the safe and effective use of diagnostic equipment, electrical testing procedures, troubleshooting methodologies, and repair techniques used in fire apparatus, ambulances, law enforcement vehicles, and other specialty emergency response vehicles.
Students will gain practical experience working with wiring systems, electronic control modules, instrumentation, sensors, switches, relays, multiplexing systems, and communication networks commonly used in emergency vehicle applications. Through classroom instruction and laboratory exercises, participants will develop the competencies necessary to identify faults, perform repairs, verify system operation, and document findings in accordance with NFPA standards, industry standards, and manufacturer specifications.
Student Equipment RequirementsStudents must bring an electronic device capable of accessing the internet for course materials, NFPA standards via NFPA Link. Acceptable devices include:· Laptop computer· Tablet computer· Other instructor-approved internet-capable device· Digital Volt Ohm Meter (DVOM) capable of measuring voltage, resistance, and amperage
Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)For participation in laboratory and hands-on activities, students must wear:· Nitrile gloves· Safety glasses with side shields· Closed-toe footwear
Students who do not have the required PPE may be restricted from participating in laboratory exercises until appropriate protective equipment is obtained.
