About this event
The torso is the core of every figure sculpture; understanding its structure as well as its role as the foundation of gesture is crucial to understanding the figure. In this five day workshop, students will have the opportunity to sculpt a ten inch torso from the live model. We will walk the students through the fundamentals of the anatomy of the torso, starting with the relationship between the ribcage and pelvis, orienting their volumes before diving into the structure and anatomy that results in the surface we see. Our approach to sculpture is always thinking globally, stepping back to see the piece as a whole and working general to specific. Although we will focus on working to achieve a high level of accuracy and naturalism in modeling, working with the torso is an excellent opportunity to exercise our creative capacity by composing our pieces through cropping. Every level of experience is welcome. Whether you are looking for an introduction to sculpting the figure or you wish to dive deeper into understanding the figure, we will guide each student through the sculpting process with hands-on individual critiques and instructor demos.
