About this event
There is nothing better than building stuff for your shop. And making bench tools that you need and are built well and are pretty, all at the same time, is a gift to yourself. Join us in this class to build a high angle block plane.. You can’t buy one at this bed angle and there are great low angle block planes available. But this design changes the bed angle to create a tool that is unmatched when cutting through highly figured wood, knots, or surprise grain direction changes. Learn how to make up a white oak blank that we will then cut up to make a bed and wedge pin to hold the iron in place. Then we’ll shape and personalize the tool for use. The second cool aspect of this class is that you will also learn how to harden and temper tool steel. Oil hardening blanks of tool steel will be provided. Students will then polish and shape the blank, heat treat them in class to harden them and then temper the tool steel to create a plane blade. This method produces a blade that can be sharpened and wears well. Plus you will gain some valuable information on tool steel. It's a treat to be able to make your own hand tools. When you grab for this high angle plane in that special situation and it does the job well, you will gain a special sort of satisfaction. Required Tools: Personal protective equipment Pencil Paper or notepad Close-toed shoes Mill smoothing file Bastard file Woodworking rasp Sharpening stones 6” rule Prerequisites Bring enthusiasm and an open mind. This class is designed for complete novices up through experienced woodworkers who would like to tune up their skills.
