About this event
Come learn to develop a comprehensive understanding of how to create a finished piece of furniture from rough material utilizing a combination of machinery and hand tools. The ‘Dovetailed Bench’ features traditional Western and Japanese joinery to create a concise but detailed study. The design for this bench relies upon a practical combination of methods to allow for a quality end result. This project focuses on foundational skills such as operating standard woodworking machinery, layout by hand, handtool joinery cutout and handplane finishing. Required Tools: Personal protective equipment Pencil Paper or notepad Close-toed shoes 18mm and 24mm chisels Handplane for finish planing Hammer Kebiki (Japanese marking gauge) for layout Marking knife Prerequisites Some basic woodworking experience would be beneficial, as we will be jumping right into milling and hand cutting joinery. Students who are comfortable and familiar with their own handplanes can expect to smooth plane parts for final finish. Consider signing up for Brian’s Japanese Tools course to gain some helpful experience prior to this project course.
