About this event
This is an introductory course for anyone with an interest in exploring the roots of proportional design. In brief, this will be a basic starting point for incorporating simple and elegant design into your work. Instead of ending up limited by someone else's plans, learn to see the built world with a new set of eyes. Free yourself from getting locked into unit measurements when conceptualizing a piece and practice proportional design in a supportive environment. We will begin by exploring an existing piece of furniture, to discover its hidden rational design. Then students will take this experience and apply it to drawing, modeling, and planning a piece of their own. Students will develop a proportional scheme and draw three views of a piece. Taking the basic drawing, they will create a scale cardboard model to evaluate the piece. If it is satisfactory, they will then make a story stick, and a scaled wooden model. If desired, students may also use these objects to work up a cutlist. Required Tools: Pencil Paper or notepad Close-toed shoes 18” straight edge 1 or 2 dividers pencil compass 30-60-90 drafting triangle 45 degree drafting triangle 0.5 mm mechanical pencil and leads white vinyl eraser 05 Pigma MICRON pen Exacto knife Prerequisites Bring enthusiasm and an open mind. This class is designed for complete novices up through experienced woodworkers who would like to tune up their skills.
