Join us for a three-day hands-on workshop exploring the traditional art of wooden boat lettering, including basic hand carving and gold leaf application. Taught by master sign painter and carver Nick Mann of Whalesong Signs, this class offers a rare opportunity to learn traditional techniques from an experienced craftsman. You’ll learn the fundamentals of letter design, layout, and spacing, along with techniques for carving letters into wood and applying real gold leaf. Essential tools such as chisels, carving gouges, burnishers, and gilding brushes will be provided, though students are encouraged to bring their own tools if they have them. Whether you’re restoring a classic vessel or adding a personal touch to your boat, you’ll leave with practical skills, new techniques, and your own piece of carved and gilded work. No experience necessary, just a love of boats, craftsmanship, and gold. Students under 18 who want to participate must be accompanied by a chaperone. Youth accompanied by a chaperone only need to pay one tuition fee.
