Trekkers – Explore, Hike, and Discover the Wild Side of Camp

The Trekkers Program at YMCA Camp Nissokone is the first step in our Wilderness Immersion & Leadership Development track — designed specifically for campers entering Grade 7 who are ready to explore beyond the edges of base camp and take on a real outdoor adventure.This immersive week gives campers a hands-on introduction to hiking, camping, and outdoor living — all while building confidence, independence, and teamwork in Michigan’s most breathtaking natural spaces.
What to ExpectTrekkers begin their week at Camp Nissokone learning essential outdoor skills:

• Hiking preparation and gear packing
• Map reading, navigation, and Leave No Trace principles
• Cooking outdoors and setting up camp
• Wilderness teamwork and safety

Then, they’ll head out on a 3-day, 2-night guided hiking expedition, exploring trails that lead to stunning views of the AuSable River, hidden forest lakes, and rugged northern landscapes. Along the way, they’ll build strong peer connections, gain new skills, and discover the power of the outdoors.
This program is all about pushing boundaries, building resilience, and learning by doing — in a supportive, staff-led environment.

Whether it’s your camper’s first hiking trip or a next step on their leadership journey, Trekkers is a chance to grow, explore, and make memories that last far beyond the trail.
We understand plans can change. Because we plan meals, staffing, and supplies ahead of time, cancellations must be emailed to camp@ymcadetroit.org by Tuesday before your session. The following deadlines apply:

• Written cancellations received by January 31: 100% of paid program fees will be refunded or credited to your YMCA account for future use.
• Written cancellations received on or after February 1st: A $50 cancellation fee per child, per week will apply. Additional paid program fees will be refunded or credited to your YMCA account for future use.
• Written cancellations received on or after April 1: A $100 cancellation fee per child, per week will apply. Additional paid program fees will be refunded or credited to your YMCA account for future use.
• Registration fees and deposits are always non-refundable and non-transferable
