About this event
Course Description In this two-session workshop, we will focus on the fundamentals to understand the construction of the face and head in the front-facing view, no three-quarter views or complex angles. When learning about portraiture, a critical first step is to understand how to draw the faces of “no-one-in-particular” before attempting to capture an exact likeness. Steve will demonstrate fun exercises to reduce features into easy shapes and explore how to play with proportions to gain a sound understanding of the process’ that have worked for the worlds greatest portrait artists. Note: for anyone that has taken this workshop before, some material will be new, so please join us again. Supply List: Graphite Pencils: Bring any that you already have. At minimum, bring an HB, 2B and 8B. Charcoal: Either stick form, vine or charcoal pencils. White Pencil: Dry media (chalky) white pencils such as white charcoal or white conte are best. Some coloured pencils and wax based white pencils are not as bright. Steve will be demonstrating with Faber Castel Pitt Matt Graphite pencils which are darker than regular graphite but smoother feeling than charcoal. They are available at Opus art supplies. Optional. Paper: - Plain white or off-white (eggshell) newsprint can work for warm-up sketches (any kind of paper can work for warm-up sketches, even grabbing something out of a recycling bin). For finished drawings, at least a few sheets or a pad of drawing paper (white or cream color) at least 11”x14” in size is ideal. Toned paper. At least a few sheets or a pad of any paper that is dark enough to show white pencil. Can be brown, grey etc. Parcel paper can work in a pinch. Higher quality options are Strathmore toned tan or grey paper or Canson Mi-tientes (oyster, chestnut, sand etc.) Just two sheets of the more expensive paper if on a budget. Again, even parcel paper can work. Eraser: Any that you have. I recommend a larger Art Gum (light brown colour), white vinyl
