About this event
Join me in this two-day workshop were I will simplify the portrait drawing process into a format suitable for all levels. In this new workshop, we will focus on the fundamentals to understand the construction of the face on day one. Before the end of the first session, we will block in the proportions of a face that will be supplied in a high-resolution photo reference. On day two we will continue and finish the portrait that we started on the first day. When learning about portraiture, a critical first step is to understand how to draw the faces of “no-one-in-particular” before attempting to capture an exact likeness. I will demonstrate fun exercises to reduce features into easy shapes and explore how to play with proportions to gain a sound understanding of the process’ that have worked for the worlds greatest portrait artists. Note: for anyone that has taken this workshop before, the reference material will be new, so please join us again. Students are also welcome to bring in their own portrait photo reference for additional tips aside from the main supplied image. Beginner Portrait Drawing Workshop Supply List Graphite Pencils: Bring any that you already have. At minimum, bring an HB, 2B, 4B and so on. Note: I will be demonstrating with Faber-Castell Pitt Matt Graphite pencils which can be found at Opus Art Supplies in Victoria. They are a “black-lead” pencil which appears darker than regular graphite but is much smoother feeling that charcoal. These are only optional. Regular graphite is also fine. Paper: Plain white or off-white (eggshell) newsprint can work. At least a few sheets or a pad at least 11”x14” in size is ideal. Eraser: Any that you have. I recommend a larger Art Gum (light brown colour), white vinyl or pink pearl to erase larger areas. For smaller areas, any Tombow Mono mechanical eraser is great. I recommend the 3.8 or 2.3mm. Blending stump: otherwise known as a tortillon. At least one, any size can work.
