Christmas at the Chesterfield Courthouse Continental Army Barracks, 1780-1781How did the soldiers of the American Revolution celebrate Christmas? What rations, presents, or other comforts were available to them to find a little yuletide cheer? Explore the experiences of soldiers and launderesses at the Chesterfield County Army barracks during the winter of 1780-1781. Through a blend of living history and a PowerPoint presentation, learn about the experiences of those who served throughout that bitter winter. The letters and observations of General Steuben and Colonel William Davies, who were in charge of the barracks, will help provide a window into Chesterfield County’s efforts to train and march reinforcements to the Continental Army in the Carolinas, while at the same time trying to repel General Benedict Arnold’s British invasion of Virginia that January. Presentation time is 45 minutes to 1 hour.
