Description

The saga of the Chesterfield County 1749 Commission of the Peace (also known as the County's Birth Certificate) is a detective story. Now you see it. Now you don't. Since it was officially issued in May 1749, Chesterfield County's oldest document, older than the U.S. Declaration of Independence, has disappeared several times during the past 277 years. Since 2004, Liess Van Der Linden has been the historical society research library chair for the Chesterfield County Historical Society. The mission of the society is to collect, preserve, interpret, and promote the county's past for the education and enjoyment of present and future generations.
