3 Session ClassSaturdaysApril 12 - 269:00 - 11:00amNolensville Rec CenterDo you love to paint, but have been unsure about how to start or what techniques to use? This is the class for you! Come and learn basic painting techniques for acrylic paints and/or refine your skills in a fun and collaborative setting. Participants will learn the following:
- The basic materials, tools, and surfaces for painting with acrylics.
- How to mix and apply values of a color to create the illusion of light and form within a scene.
- How to use Gesso to prepare your canvas.
- The process of transferring images to a canvas and painting directly (Alla Prima) by mixing colors as they are observed.
- How to apply layers of color applications to finish a painting that accurately communicates the subject through direct painting.
- The basics of color theory and how to mix colors accurately.
- How to use acrylic fluid and gel mediums to enhance the versatility of the medium.
- How to develop a painting completely made up of neutral values (Grisaille) to establish the tonal range.
- How to create and apply translucent glazes of color over an underpainting to develop the colors within a scene.
- How to apply thick Impasto applications of color with painting knives.
- Strategies for creating successful abstract and non-objective acrylic paintings.
- The technique of underpainting.
Students will bring their own supplies for this class.
Supply List:
- Thick bodied acrylic paint (grumbachers or are good) in the following colors: Alizarin crimson, Cadmium red (or cadmium red light), Cobalt blue, Ultramarine blue, Yellow ochre, Lemon yellow (or any “bright” yellow), Black, White, Sap green, Phthalo green, Alizarin orange
- brushes with soft bristles : a selection of round, flat, and filbert (I prefer a large, small, and medium in each
- A palette
- A palette knife
- A pad of canvas paper 12x16
