About this event
In Purgatorio, the second canticle of The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri, the poet imagines the soul’s ascent up the mountain of purification, where disordered loves are gradually healed through repentance, discipline, and grace. Purgatory offers a rich vision of moral formation: it unites poetry, theology, philosophy, and psychology to portray how human beings are shaped by what they love, and how true freedom emerges not from self-expression alone but from the reordering of desire toward the good. Unlike the despair of Hell, this realm is marked by hope, friendship, beauty, and song—making it a profoundly humane exploration of growth and transformation. To read it is to enter a conversation about virtue, suffering, and the telos of human life, one that forms the imagination as much as the intellect and invites readers to consider what it means to become rightly ordered, and ultimately, fully alive.
