Description

44. 16. ALBARIÑO, GODELLO, VERDEJO (Friday, June 12)
Albariño, Godello and Verdejo are the three most important varieties in the new white wines of Spain. Verdejo was rescued decades ago by Marqués de Riscal and has become the star of Castilian whites in the Rueda appellation. Jancis Robinson has written in the past that the variety has more aging potential than Albariño. At the same time, the quality and success of the Rías Baixas wine region made the Albariño grape the queen of the Spanish white grapes. However, in the last decade Godello has emerged in Valdeorras, Bierzo, and other appellations as a strong contender. In fact, many critics and aficionados consider that the wines made with Godello have surpassed Albariño and Verdejo and have already reached world-class quality at the highest level, even earning the coveted 100 points in the Wine Advocate. In this tasting we will compare the personalities and styles of these three distinctive grapes bringing top examples of each variety.
