About this event
In this class we will explore to painting the urban landscapes outdoors (en plein air) using oils. We will focus on capturing natural light, atmosphere, and color by observing scenes directly. We will learn the essential techniques of plein air painting –simplifying complex scenes, managing changing conditions, composition, value studies, and using a limited palette along with understanding necessary portable gear to translate a scene into expressive paintings and make the experience enjoyable. Supplies: Portable easel (and palette) and other gear (tripod, umbrella, chair, etc..). Oil Paint: (see standard basic oil painting supply list below, however; we will start with very limited palette…more information on that will be supplies prior to the start of the class). Medium: Galkyd Gel is great for plein air painting. Odor-free solvent like Gamsol or Turpenoid (and container). Supports: multiple canvases, panels, wood panels according to your preference, in a variety of sizes – 5”x7”, 8”x10”, 9”x 10” (consider squares and longer rectangles too). Brushes: Filberts, Brights, and/or rounds. Various sizes-#2, #4, #8, #12 and any others you might want. Quality paper towels (blue automotive are good) and something for your trash. Bug spray, sunscreen, hats, snacks, etc..Anything you need to be comfortable painting outdoors for an extended period. Prerequisites: Participants may work in either oil or acrylic according to preference and comfort with the media. It is recommended that student have some painting experience in either oils or acrylics.
