About this event
Prerequisite: Beginning Drawing Class Description: This drawing course focuses on using charcoal in observational drawing of objects from life, as well as landscapes and interiors from photographs. Through a series of exercises students will become familiar with fundamental techniques necessary to translate values and textures of forms and spaces to a two-dimensional surface, and to achieve effective compositions and mood through abstraction and simplification. Materials: NEEDED for first day of class • 18”x24” Strathmore 500 Series White Charcoal Drawing Pad • Vine or Willow Charcoals in Thick and Medium sizes • One Black Compressed Charcoal • Kneaded Eraser • Soft Paper Towel • 2 Large Binder Clips or Bull Clips NEEDED for later classes – will discuss on first day of class with examples • Gray and Black Paper, one sheet each (such as 19”x24” Strathmore Toned sketch paper) • One Black Charcoal Pencil (medium or soft) • One White Charcoal Pencil • One White Compressed Charcoal, Chalk, or Conté • 18” Ruler (cork-backed metal recommended) • Roll of Drafting Tape • 2” Chip Brush from hardware store • Chamois or Cheap Makeup Sponges in any shape OPTIONAL • Blending Stump • White Triangular Eraser • Sandpaper Block or Emery Boards (a.k.a. disposable nail files) • Glassine (archival) or Tracing Paper (not archival) to cover your drawing • Spray Fixative for dry media (Sennelier Latour or Delacroix recommended) • Pen-Shaped Eraser such as Tombow MONO Zero Rectangle Eraser • Sketchbook
