Healthcare systems are complex, interconnected environments where patients, teams, technologies, and policies continuously interact in unpredictable ways. This e-learning module, Patterns, People, and Practice: A Systems Approach to Nurse Leadership, introduces nurse leaders to systems thinking and Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) as a framework for understanding and influencing this complexity. Learners will move beyond linear problem-solving to examine patterns, relationships, and underlying structures that shape outcomes in clinical and administrative settings. The course focuses on applying systems-based approaches to improve decision-making, anticipate unintended consequences, and support adaptive change. Designed for nurse leaders at all levels, this module strengthens the ability to lead effectively within dynamic healthcare environments and drive sustainable improvement. Vanderbilt University School of Nursing is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Commission on Accreditation. To earn continuing education credit, participants must complete both the Nurse Leader pre-assessment and post-assessment. Upon successful completion, learners will be awarded 0.75 ANCC contact hours.
