These advances and the pioneers that drove them forged the development of the modern field of nursing, advanced hospital systems and new concepts in treating the mental and emotional scars of war. These breakthroughs not only saved countless lives during the Civil War but would greatly enhance medicine’s ability to alleviate suffering for many generations to come.
