Discover the traditional Japanese art of Kintsugi, the practice of repairing broken ceramics by highlighting their imperfections with lacquer. In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn the techniques used to restore small chips and damage while exploring the philosophy of finding beauty in repair.
Working in a supportive class setting, participants will practice the Kintsugi process using chipped ceramic pieces provided by the instructor. During the workshop, you will work on two ceramic pieces at different stages of the restoration process and complete one practice piece to take home. You will also learn how to create traditional lacquered chopsticks, giving you an introduction to another Japanese craft.
All tools and materials are included. Each participant will receive a practice ceramic piece and a pair of chopsticks to take home. (Please note that the ceramic pieces used in class may differ from those shown in promotional images.)
Participants are also welcome to bring their own broken ceramic items to discuss possible repair methods with the instructor.
IMPORTANT - Safety Information: This workshop uses Urushi lacquer, the traditional material essential to Kintsugi. Urushi can cause severe skin irritation in some individuals. Protective gloves will be provided, and participants should apply Vaseline to any exposed skin before handling the lacquer. Please avoid contact with unintended surfaces.
Please do NOT register for this workshop if you have previously had a reaction to poison ivy, as Urushi is closely related and may cause a similar allergic response.
For those who wish to continue practicing at home, a Kintsugi kit will be available for purchase during the class.
