About this event
Overview: The craft of cabinetmaking is rooted in fine woodworking, but requires more of a production mentality. Most contemporary cabinet makers work with sheet goods - plywood or MDF with a thin veneer of cabinet grade wood glued to the surface. These products are stable and flat and attractive, but their large size presents challenges for those working in a small shop. In this class we will work with a track saw to machine our pieces to size - a slower, but more approachable method than using a sliding panel table saw, a machine that can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Because of the proliferation of big-box stores selling mass market kitchen cabinets at low cost, it is harder and harder to find custom cabinet makers who can build you something that is unusually sized or shaped. But with some relatively affordable tools and an understanding of basic cabinet construction methods, you will be able to design and build your own. In this class we will discuss different methods of constructing carcasses (cabinet boxes) and drawer boxes. We will learn how to lay out pieces on our sheets of plywood, and how to use a track saw to cut them out. We will learn about different edging techniques. We will build the carcasses and drawers for this year’s tiny house project. Project description: The class will work together to build the carcasses and drawer boxes for this year’s tiny house project. Students under 18 may attend with parental permission.
