A great way to refine your woodworking skills is through box making. Little boxes don’t require a lot of material volume, so you can experiment with more expensive wood varieties. You can build beautiful boxes that are accessible to all skill levels, choosing more advanced joinery techniques as your skills improve. In this introductory class, we focus on the relatively straightforward, yet elegant, miter joint, using a variety of wood species and finishing techniques to create a beautiful keepsake box. In this course, students will build a box constructed of hardwood using a splined miter joint with contrasting wood for the splines. Students will veneer the plywood bottom and set it in a groove in the sides. The top is inset in a rabbet in the sides. The box is finished with oil and wax. Students under 18 may attend with parental permission.
