What makes a building stop you in your tracks and say wow? In this project-based class, students will explore eye-catching exterior architectural styles, such as the soaring arches of Gothic buildings, the ornate details of Victorian homes, the clean lines of Modern design, and the welcoming porches of Craftsman houses. Students will also investigate building materials such as brick, stone, wood, metal, and glass, weighing the pros and cons of each for durability, maintenance, comfort, and sustainability. Using graph paper and scale, students will bring their ideas to life by drawing front and side elevation views of their dream home, carefully converting real-world measurements into accurate, proportional designs. By the end of the class, students will recognize the design choices, materials, and creativity that turn ordinary structures into architectural statements.
